LEED v5 Materials and Resources: From Embodied Carbon to Circularity
About the Training
This course will provide an in-depth look at the Materials and Resources credit category within the LEED v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C) rating system. It will cover the two prerequisites and five credits that span the rating system’s core impact areas of Decarbonization, Quality of Life, and Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration. Participants will learn how LEED v5 elevates embodied carbon assessment with a prerequisite requirement to quantify cradle-to-gate emissions across key material categories, along with a new Embodied Carbon credit that provides multiple options for achievement. The session will examine the Building Product Selection and Procurement credit’s multi-attribute scoring framework, which aligns with the Common Materials Framework. The presenters will also cover the updated Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion credit, which places increased value on salvaged and source-separated materials over commingled recycling.

Carrie Havey, LEED Fellow, has been with The Green Engineer since 2010. Carrie’s expertise resides in facilitating workshops and collaborating with project teams to provide sustainable design advice and LEED guidance at every stage of a project. She is skilled in overseeing projects that need to meet sustainable design regulatory requirements, such as MSBA or Article 37 in Boston. She has experience on a wide range of project types, including higher education facilities, k-12 schools, labs, multi-family residential, municipal buildings, and commercial interiors.
Matt Smith has been a Senior Sustainability Consultant with The Green Engineer since 2012. Matt’s expertise includes cross-discipline team collaboration, technical understanding of relevant requirements, and helping project owner’s and teams to realize their commitments and goals within their projects. He assists architects and other consultants in the pursuit of multiple third-party certifications including managing the LEED submittal process and coordinating the documentation required for the certification application to the USGBC. Matt also works with project teams in support of the sustainable design requirements of zoning for Boston’s Article 37 and Cambridge’s Article 22. At The Green Engineer, Matt often works on office/lab core shell and residential projects. Additionally, he has significant experience with higher education academic and administrative projects as well as public education projects.

Learning Objectives
1. Describe the two MR prerequisites, Planning for Zero Waste Operations and Quantify and Assess Embodied Carbon, and understand their compliance paths.
2. Evaluate the embodied carbon reduction strategies available under the Reduce Embodied Carbon credit and determine which approach or combination of approaches is appropriate for a given project type.
3. Apply the Common Materials Framework to product selection and explain how the Building Product Selection and Procurement credit uses multi-attribute scoring to evaluate third-party certifications, ecolabels, and declarations.
4. Develop a construction and demolition waste management strategy and understand how salvaged materials are an important component of earning the Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion credit.

Express Grant Eligibility
Employers with 100 or fewer Massachusetts, W-2 employees are eligible to receive Express Program grants. Express Program grant applications must be submitted no fewer than 21 days before the training date. The following documentation is required to apply:
Signed Form W-9
Certificate of Good Standing (COGS) from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, dated within 6 months from the date of application submission
Certificate of Compliance from the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) that is not expired on the date of application submission
The contracting period of approved Express Grants begins 21 days after the grant application date and ends one year from this date. All training must be completed within the contract period to be eligible for reimbursement.

Full refunds are available only if written notice is provided 7 days prior to course start date. There will be no refund if less than one week’s notice is given.
Please note: Full refunds will be issued less the standard processing fee. In general, rescheduling is always preferred over refunds. Registration transfers are only allowed for rescheduling to a future training and cannot be transferred between individuals.
