We are seeking an AEC professional who is passionate about applying sustainable design to building performance. In this position you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects throughout all our sectors and produce analysis to identify creative solutions in support of our Building Performance Studio. Under the guidance and direction of the Director of Building Performance, you will collaborate with project teams to establish and track building performance goals.

Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with the design team to track building performance goals related to energy/carbon, wellness, resilience, and/or other topics
    • Track progress of multiple projects simultaneously and work with internal design teams, external engineering consultants, clients and construction teams to keep projects on track to meet goals
    • Manage various building certifications, including LEED, WELL, and Fitwel. Complete documentation associated with certification compliance and liaise with reviewers
    • Provide building performance assessments including solar and daylight analysis at various stages of project design
    • Stay current on iterative changes related to certification programs
    • Research and maintain working knowledge of newest technologies and trends in sustainable design
    • Prepare presentations for meetings, coordinate project tasks, and prepare reports
    • Collection of project metrics and assist with reporting projects for AIA 2030 Commitment and AIA Materials Pledge

Qualifications:

    • LEED Accredited Professional
    • Bachelor or Master’s degree in architecture, engineering, building science, built environment, and/or sustainability
    • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in sustainability, or related field, within the architectural, engineering, and construction industry
    • Knowledge of the building design and construction process, ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings
    • Knowledge of sustainable building practices including but not limited to energy efficiency, embodied carbon, air and water quality, thermal comfort, daylighting, material transparency, and/or regenerative design
    • Excellent communication and organization skills
    • Experience with LEED documentation and process.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign
    • Relevant accreditations and experience (e.g. WELL, Fitwel, Certified Passive House Consultant) a plus • Experience with computational design, energy modeling, load calculations, or carbon analysis a plus
    • Familiarity with building performance standards and stretch codes focused on energy efficiency and electrification a plus

    • Energy Modeling. Perform advanced energy modeling analysis for commercial and residential buildings primarily using OpenStudio/Energy Plus in accordance with ASHRAE Standards.
    • Perform energy savings and lifecycle cost analyses of energy saving measures related to the building enclosure, lighting, HVAC, plug loads, and building energy management systems.
    • Perform excel based calculations utilizing engineering principles.
    • Technical design review of Mechanical and Enclosure design.
    • Develop and write reports that detail building components as well as describe energy efficiency measures to improve design and control for new and existing facilities.
    • Performing on-site inspections and testing involving visual observation and diagnostic testing of building performance issues, enclosure/mechanical system failures.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and cloud-based file management tools.

Energy Design Lead | West Work

About West Work
West Work is seeking an Energy and Sustainability Designer to join our growing sustainability and building performance team. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional in architecture, architectural engineering, building science, sustainability, or a related field with a strong interest in high-performance building envelope design, Passive House strategies, and low-carbon construction.

The Energy Designer will work on both residential renovation and new construction projects. Renovation work, including deep energy retrofits, will involve supporting in evaluating existing building performance, designing and documenting high-performance assemblies, and analyzing simulated outcomes using energy modeling software. Occupant health, durability, and adaptive reuse are central to West Work’s mission. Energy Designers work closely with Project Managers, and design teams to integrate sustainability strategies into projects from feasibility through construction. On new construction projects, the Energy Designer will support Passive House feasibility studies, energy modeling, and sustainability certification efforts. Familiarity with Mass Save incentive pathways is helpful but not required.

Our current energy design portfolio emphasizes multifamily housing, with opportunities to work on civic and higher education buildings.

Responsibilities
The Energy Designer will:

    • Review architectural designs through 3D digital and 2D graphic exploration to determine energy saving approaches and recommendations
    • Produce space plans and building programs that increase building efficiency
    • Investigate construction materials and building products to ensure compliance with relevant certification goals and building energy code
    • Evaluate and documenting existing buildings
    • Create client presentations and information graphics
    • Provide support with energy code compliance pathways for multifamily buildings
    • Assist with decarbonization studies, historic utility data analysis and benchmarking exercises
    • Support the development and documentation of building envelope and energy strategies
    • Participate in meetings with clients, collaborators, and consultants while developing professional communication skills
    • Assist senior staff with Passive House, Enterprise Green Communities, LEED and other sustainability certification processes
    • Support with preparation of Mass Save reimbursement documentation
    • Support grant and funder applications
    • Participate in construction administration related to sustainability objectives
    • Develop skills in balancing comfortably between architectural design and technical analysis
    • Assist in writing decarbonization and energy model reports with recommendations
    • Review project documentation with guidance from senior staff and learn building science best practices
    • Assist design teams by drafting building envelope details in Revit
