Embodied Carbon in Concrete and Wood

February 8 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Embodied Carbon in Concrete and Wood.
Massachusetts Clean Energy Center

This course looks at the carbon and environmental impacts of concrete and wood building materials, how they have improved over the years, and where they still fall short. We’ll focus on concrete’s carbon emissions problem and solutions, cement and concrete alternatives (including supplementary cementitious materials), and building code changes. We’ll also look at wood building materials, including mass timber and other engineered products. Forestry’s carbon accounting and environmental impacts are complicated and in flux, so we’ll dig in to some of those challenges, the state of forestry certifications, and life-cycle data/environmental product declarations. Discussion is encouraged.

The course is taught by Brent Ehrlich, Product & Materials Specialist, and Paula Melton, Editorial Director, at BuildingGreen.

Learning Objectives

• Participants will learn the carbon impacts of cement and the importance of low-carbon concrete.
• Participants will learn about low-carbon concrete alternatives and how code changes can allow for their use.
• Participants will learn about engineered wood products and their benefits and limitations.
• Participants will learn about the current state of forest certifications and how our understanding of these is impacting wood’s embodied carbon.
