About the Training
Thanks to the Sponsors of Mass Save® and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, registration for each session in this series is being offered at a reduced cost from Built Environment Plus’ typical course rate.

In this two-part training, we will review the differences in Residential codes across Massachusetts’ three energy codes – Base code, Stretch, and Net Zero – for Single Family Homes, existing, Additions, and Renovations. Various wall assemblies, air barriers, windows, and ceilings/roofs will be discussed. Participants will gain an understanding of the embodied carbon credit, as well as mechanical systems, solar systems, and electrical vehicle requirements. Additionally, participants will learn what is needed to build, test, and verify to the new code for these project types. While there are no prerequisites to join this training, it is recommended that attendees have already taken the level 1 courses taught by PSD and MassSave.

Full refunds are available only if written notice is provided 7 days prior to course start date. There will be no refund if less than one week’s notice is given. Please note: Full refunds will be issued less the standard processing fee. In general, rescheduling is always preferred over refunds. Registration transfers are only allowed for rescheduling to a future training and cannot be transferred between individuals.

This training is eligible for 4 AIA LU / HSW continuing education credits.

This is a live, online training led by Amy Sheehan Latva-Kokko and Courtney Borelli with DSK | Dewing Schmid Kearns Architects + Planners; and Maciej Konieczny with New Ecology.

Amy Sheehan Latva-Kokko, AIA, CPHD, LEED BD+C, is the Chair of the BSA Committee on the Environment, and the Director of Sustainability at DSK Dewing Schmid Kearns in Concord, MA. Amy has worked on various aspects of the energy code, as part of the development as a municipal voter of IECC 2021, and then working to adopt the Specialized code in her town. Amy fields a lot of questions on the energy code, and is excited to teach with her talented colleague Courtney Borelli. Amy organizes an internal education program DSKU in which she and colleagues have taught classes on resilience, building detailing, architectural theory, and compliance with the new energy codes in Massachusetts.

Courtney Borelli, RA, CPHD, is a Senior Associate at DSK Dewing Schmid Kearns in Concord, MA. Courtney is an architect licensed in Massachusetts and a Certified Passive House Designer. Courtney works primarily on high-performance single-family residential homes and building envelopes from initial conception through completion of construction.

Maciej Konieczny, CEM, LEED AP, CBCP, CPHC, CPHB, is a recognized expert in sustainable development, specializing in affordable multifamily housing. As Director of Building Technologies at New Ecology, he drives innovation and impact by leading highly complex development projects, bringing deep expertise in Passive House, energy codes, and advanced mechanical systems. He also empowers his team and the industry through staff mentorship and by leading educational initiatives on critical topics like embodied carbon analysis and sustainable building practices. Beyond technical leadership, Maciej cultivates strong client relationships and fosters business development, ensuring strategic growth for the organization.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify current requirements in the stretch code for Additions for residences.
2. Identify different building assemblies that meet the prescribed requirements.
3. Understand construction best practices to meet stringent air leakage testing.
4. Understand carbon credits and HERS accounting.

Express Grant Eligibility

Employers with 100 or fewer Massachusetts, W-2 employees are eligible to receive Express Program grants. Express Program grant applications must be submitted no fewer than 21 days before the training date. The following documentation is required to apply:

Signed Form W-9
Certificate of Good Standing (COGS) from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, dated within 6 months from the date of application submission
Certificate of Compliance from the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) that is not expired on the date of application submission

The contracting period of approved Express Grants begins 21 days after the grant application date and ends one year from this date. All training must be completed within the contract period to be eligible for reimbursement.
