Tools for Building Life-Cycle Assessment (Part A )

Through this course participants will begin to understand the basics of conducting an LCA for a building.
Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is a critical methodology that can be used by building designers to evaluate the climate impact of their projects. Building design professionals are invited to join this course to learn an overview of LCA and how it is used within the design workflow. Through direct instruction in the LCA tool, Tally, participants will begin to understand the basics of conducting an LCA for a building. Also, through live demonstration, participants will be introduced to the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) Tool, a free and open-source database of environmental product declarations (EPDs). To reinforce the introduction of both tools, participants will have the opportunity to complete a practice exercise at home.
Learning Objectives:
– Learn to evaluate the environmental impact of building materials through the use of life-cycle assessment (LCA)
– Learn to interpret and communicate results from an LCA
– Learn to utilize industry tools to evaluate the environmental impact of a building
– Learn to conduct an LCA that meets the Whole-Building Life-Cycle Assessment requirements of LEED v4 and v4.1″
