Energy Systems Manager | Salem State University

General Statement of Duties

Facilities is seeking an energy systems manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the campus energy systems, as well as serve as a technical expert on energy, mechanical, electrical, plumbing operations and construction projects. The energy systems manager is a critical partner in the university’s efforts to reduce energy use and decarbonize building operations to meet Salem State’s goal of carbon neutrality, including a $53 million decarbonization project in the planning stages for north campus.

The Salem State Facilities Department maintains the grounds and almost 1.6 million square feet of building space across five main campuses. Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage and operate the Energy Management System
• Troubleshoot EMS operating issues, including connectivity with Network Services, and other vendor(s) systems
• Provide 24-hour emergency response for EMS/BAS systems
• Schedule and program all non-automated events, holidays or special requests in the EMS/BAS
• Interact with the technical staff on too hot/cold calls from building occupants, investigating nature of the problem and proposing solutions
• Perform detailed energy analyses to identify opportunities to reduce energy use
• Develop/implement improved systems and projects
• Determine systems scheduling for optimal efficiency and cost
• Generate reports on energy use trends, budget, and climate commitment
• Oversee campus solar arrays to ensure proper energy production and revenue. Establish and manage maintenance contract and utility & SREC records
• Manage demand response program
• Generate, update, and maintain preventive maintenance programs
• Assist in establishing department standards on controls and HVAC
• Work closely with others to oversee maintenance operations regarding energy conservation and efficient system operations
• Supervise and coordinate the activities of consultants and vendors on HVAC designs and energy-related projects
• Serve as the subject matter expert for the mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades; work closely with the Trades Workers in these areas
• Review studies and designs as the lead technical resource on capital project teams and on energy projects including the current North Campus Decarbonization Project
• Perform other duties as requested
• Serve on university committees, ad hoc task forces and/or workgroups as designated
• Demonstrate sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles
• Demonstrate sensitivity to student, faculty and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or facilities management
• Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, identify and implement effective solutions
• Three to five years of experience in energy management. Certified Energy Manager or comparable designation will be considered in lieu of up to 2 years of experience
• Extensive Knowledge of Energy Management Systems and Building Automation Systems

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, identifies solutions, make and implement effective solutions
• Demonstrated ability to oversee a variety of programs and assignments simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities and requirements
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to interact with various agencies/individuals (i.e. employees, other departments, outside agencies and vendors) to coordinate activities and resolve problems
• Ability to interpret blueprints and electrical/mechanical drawings
• Ability to coordinate with energy project teams as the lead campus technical resource

Working Conditions
This is a hybrid position which has on-site, in-person responsibilities.

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.
