Reports To: Director of Sustainability
The Building Scientist will play a pivotal role in identifying and designing improvements to existing building envelopes and interiors, with a particular focus on addressing moisture issues. This position requires a deep understanding of building science principles, materials, and methods to enhance building performance and durability. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, practical experience in building diagnostics, and the ability to develop and implement effective solutions.
Location: Must reside in MA or RI. Hybrid work schedule.
Key Responsibilities
• Condition Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments of existing building envelopes to identify deficiencies, particularly related to moisture intrusion.
• Diagnostics: Recommend required testing and manage appropriate subcontractors to understand building construction, moisture damage and other building characteristics.
• Improvement Design: Develop design solutions to improve building air tightness, moisture control, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality.
• Conceptual Design: Select appropriate materials and construction methods to enhance building envelope performance and resilience.
• Collaborative Innovation: Work with RPM engineers to integrate building and mechanical system solutions.
• Tech-Savvy: Stay updated on the latest materials, embodied carbon resources and industry trends.
• Project Leader: Manage projects and budgets.
• Networker: Build strong connections with vendors, installers, and utility partners.
• Mentor: Support and promote team learning and growth opportunities.
• Continuous Improvement: Participate in research and development initiatives related to building envelope performance and industry challenges.
• Communication: Clear, concise written and oral presentation of existing conditions, data analysis, and recommendations.
Skills and Qualifications
• Innovative Thinking: Ability to think creatively and outside the box.
• Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of building science principles, particularly related to building envelopes, moisture control, and material performance.
• Diagnostic Skills: Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and techniques for assessing existing building envelopes, identifying moisture and other concerns, and infrared thermography.
• Analytical Ability: Strong analytical skills to interpret data, identify patterns, and develop effective solutions.
• Design Proficiency
• Project Management: Proven ability to manage projects from inception to completion, including planning, coordination, subcontractor oversight, and quality assurance.
• Building Certification: Familiarity with Passive House, NGBS, Enterprise, LEED and/or other certification programs preferred. .
Education and Experience
• Education: BS in engineering, architecture, construction, or a related technical field.
• General Background: Experience in designing building envelope and interior improvements.
Basic understanding of HVAC and other building systems.
• Certifications: PHIUS, LEED or other performance-based certification preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of five years of relevant experience.
• Team and Independent Work: Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
• Travel: Ability to travel locally as needed.
