A LEED Professional Credential helps you stand out by increasing your opportunity for employment, job stability and promotion, while underscoring your value to LEED project teams and sustainability-focused organizations.
Prior to 2009, all LEED accredited individuals were referred to as LEED Accredited Professionals or LEED APs. Since 2009 the USGBC has recognized three tiers of LEED accreditation:
- The LEED Green Associate denotes a basic knowledge of LEED and green buildings.
- The LEED Accredited Professional with Specialty denotes advanced knowledge of one specific LEED rating system.
- The LEED Fellow recognizes an individual with 10 or more years of experience and 8 years of LEED accreditation.
LEED Green Associate
Candidates for the LEED Green Associate are required to pass a 2-hour exam, which focuses on the LEED rating system and introductory green building concepts. The LEED Green Associate exam is administered at local Prometric testing centers.
Candidates are highly encouraged to purchase the LEED Green Associate Exam Study Guide from the USGBC.
USGBC Massachusetts coordinates a LEED Green Associate study group and also offers a 1-day LEED Green Associate exam preparation workshops. See our calendar for dates and more information.
LEED Accredited Professional with Specialty
Candidates for the LEED Accredited Professional with Specialty are required to pass the 2-hour LEED Green Associate exam and a 2-hour specialty exam. Candidates may choose to take these exams in a single 4-hour testing session or they may choose to first pass the 2-hour LEED Green Associate exam and later sit for the 2-hour specialty exam. The specialty exam focuses on one particular rating system: LEED Building Design + Construction, LEED Operations + Maintenance, LEED Interior Design + Construction, LEED Neighborhood Development or LEED Homes. The LEED Accredited Professional with Specialty exam is administered at local Prometric testing centers.
Candidates are highly encouraged to purchase the relevant USGBC Reference Guide (LEED BD+C v4, LEED Homes v4, LEED ID+C v4 or LEED O+M v4 from the USGBC.
