SUMMARY:Breaking the Cost Barrier | Green Building Training Program
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Sarah Gudeman via BSA \nBreaking the Cost Barrier? \nLike it or not\, money talks. In pursuing high performance\, there are many potential financial pitfalls. \nFor example\, the benefit of high performance envelope strategies are often washed out with overly-conservative HVAC sizing; using rules of thumb for system sizing makes it look like achieving targets are out of reach. And\, designers often are not aware of the impact of their design decisions on loads\, HVAC system design\, and construction cost. So\, improper investments are made that tip the balance away from achieving both energy and construction cost goals. \nIn other words\, using data to question and inform optimal design decisions is essential to achieve true high performance without driving up construction cost. The high performance goals extend beyond energy to address indoor environmental quality including thermal comfort and daylighting. The experts listed below\, will guide you through these challenges\, and approaches to deal with them\, using real world experiences and case studies to showcase each scenario. \nGet Ready to Play! \nBut\, beyond your typical training\, this session directly engages the attendees in a game that simulates the design decisions encountered on actual projects. In the game\, teams compete to achieve high performance goals\, while breaking the cost barrier. You will be surprised at what you learn through this hands-on process\, and how much fun you have doing it! \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Upon completion:\n\nparticipants will be able to describe what drives a peak heating and cooling load\, and how those related to annual energy consumption.\nparticipants will be able to explain the impact that envelope performance and amount of glass have on HVAC system sizing and first cost.\nparticipants will be able to dispel the myth that quality design\, superior energy performance (NZE)\, occupant satisfaction and low first costs are incompatible goals through real examples.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n You and your business may be eligible to take this training for FREE! Learn more about this opportunity at our Green Building Training Program website. \n \n \n \n \n \n Green Building Training Program Information\n This course is now funded through the Commonwealth Workforce Training Fund’s Small Business Direct Access Program (SBDAP). If you are a small\, Massachusetts-based business that employs 100 people or less\, you and your employees may be eligible to take this training session for free! Learn more about this opportunity at our Green Building Training Program website. \n** This course will be hosted virtually. All attendees\, regardless of whether or not they are eligible for the Green Building Training Program (GBTP)\, must register for the course through our Eventbrite page. For GBTP participants\, your company’s enrollment in the Commonwealth Workforce Training Fund’s Small Business Direct Access Program (SBDAP) must be verified before you can access the Zoom link – unverified participants will not be let into the meeting. ** \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Alejandra Menchaca\, PhD\, LEED AP\, WELL AP\n Vice President | Thornton Tomasetti\nAlejandra is a Vice President in the Sustainability practice for Thornton Tomasetti.  She combines expertise in mechanical engineering and building science to give clients a clear understanding of the impact design strategies and innovative solutions have on long-term building performance. SUMMARY:Leading From The Middle | Green Building Training Program
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Luis Alvarez/DigitalVision/Getty Images\nManaging Change\n\nDo you ever find yourself in situations where you want to challenge what’s going on or make a change\, but don’t have the authority to dictate what you want?\nHave you ever seen an opportunity for improvement or innovation\, but you aren’t in a position to make it happen? \nDo you ever come up against clients\, ‘bosses’ or others who create (unnecessary) barriers – and you feel frustrated? \nDo you struggle to get a project team aligned or focused on goals or working truly as a team?\n\n\nThese situations are especially challenging given the urgency of addressing carbon\, the increased impacts of climate change and public health. To champion sustainability goals and outcomes\, these skills are critical yet few of us get them in school! \nWell\, the good news is – even if you are not the titled “leader”\, all of these things are possible. You can “lead” from behind or from the middle – and develop the skills\, strategies and tactics to make all of these situations easier to manage. You can strengthen your ability to deal with others more effectively\, lead or manage “up”\, help your colleagues or team work more cohesively and just be happier in your work\, feeling more capable and not powerless! \nThis four-hour experiential learning workshop will breeze by and introduce you to different skills and frameworks that you can apply immediately to be more effective in anything you do\, and in any role you hold in your career. \n\n  \nYou and your business may be eligible to take this training for FREE! Learn more about this opportunity at our Green Building Training Program website.\n \n \n \n \n \n Green Building Training Program Information\n This course is now funded through the Commonwealth Workforce Training Fund’s Small Business Direct Access Program (SBDAP). ** \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\n\nEvaluate your own leadership capacity and style to assess your natural strengths and areas to improve and understand how those impact your effectiveness.\nDevelop your ability to use the skills of communication\, influence and persuasion to engage others’ interests and move from argument\, conflict or disconnect to increased buy-in and mutual gains.\nUnderstand the best ways of using coaching and feedback skills to encourage others\, reflect on challenging situation and bring out the best in those around you (especially in a team setting that has bad dynamics).\nLeverage specific frameworks\, strategies and proven methodologies to initiate and manage change in a group\, team\, department or your organization so that there is a perceived sense of urgency and consistent uptake.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Barbra Batshalom\n Executive Director | Sustainable Performance Institute \n With a background in social psychology\, architecture\, and 20+ years of sustainability consulting\, Barbra brings a unique perspective engaging the human dynamics of decision-making and creative collaboration to technical work. Barbra has seen first-hand that a lack of technical knowledge is not the barrier to success in sustainability – but the human skills of leadership\, communication\, team effectiveness\, strategic thinking and change management are what make the difference and enable professionals to be effective at making technical solutions come to life. This has become her primary focus when working with firms of all sizes\, providing training\, coaching and strategic consulting.  She helps companies all over the world to institutionalize sustainability and improve performance and profitability\, helping them set new goals\, develop strategies and implement change management initiatives to move them from “random acts” of sustainability to high levels of success and effectiveness. She has worked with local governments and institutions to create policies and programs that require green building and net zero communities and teaches leadership\, sustainable real estate development and other courses in graduate schools. She serves on AIA’s 2030 Commitment Working Group and on the Board of Built Environment Plus.

SUMMARY:WELL AP Exam Prep | Green Building Training Program
DESCRIPTION:8 Hour Training presented by Built Environment Plus \n\n** “WELL AP Exam Prep” will be hosted virtually. **\n\nMost people spend up to 90 percent of their time in buildings – while the health of the building is highly critical\, it is a component that was often overlooked. Now with the advent of COVID-19\, our perspective on this component has changed: building designers and operators must re-examine how we navigate offices\, restaurants\, stores\, schools\, and residential common areas. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put out new guidelines for the health and safety of the indoor space. Fortunately\, the WELL Building Standard® provides the knowledge necessary to make the health and well-being of building residents an even greater priority. \nThe WELL standard is an evidence-base verified rating system focused on operational policies\, maintenance protocols\, and the health of the occupants. WELL is grounded in the premise that buildings play a leading role in supporting the health and well-being of the residents. \n\nWithin this WELL course you will learn how to articulate the financial\, societal\, and environmental benefits of WELL certification\, identify the role of the International Well Building Institute and the WELL Building Standard\, recognize the structure of the WELL Building Standard\, explain the seven concepts of the WELL Building standard\, the strategies to achieve them\, and the health impacts they address\, and summarize the certification process of the WELL Building Standard. \nThe WELL AP Exam Prep Class will have nine sections which will be given over the course of one day. Upon completion of the class you will be eligible to sit for the WELL AP exam at a local testing center. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Meet the Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jenn TarantoDirector of Sustainability | STO Building Group \nJennifer Taranto brings more than 20 years of experience in the commercial real estate and construction industry. SUMMARY:Zero Carbon Buildings — Municipal Summit
DESCRIPTION:Image via Architecture 2030 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Why are we hosting this event? \nWe want to empower Municipal Leaders and Staff with knowledge on Zero Carbon Buildings\, so that they have the context and confidence to make the necessary transition towards our Zero Carbon Future. \nBack in March\, Gov. Baker signed a landmark climate bill\, An Act Creating a Next Generation Roadmap for the Massachusetts Climate Policy\, into law. Included in this bill is an opt-in stretch code which represents a big win for municipalities. Elected and appointed officials from 59 municipalities representing 40% of the Commonwealth’s population signed a letter to Governor Baker expressly calling for the development of an opt-in net-zero stretch code to allow communities to address building sector emissions. \nMassachusetts is stepping up and empowering local municipalities to achieve their climate goals in an efficient and coordinated way. We need to work together over the next year to ensure the building sector is decarbonized in a way that is consistent with our shared carbon reduction goals. \nAccording to Architecture2030\, with data from the UN Environmental Global Status Report 2017\, embodied carbon will be responsible for almost half of total new construction emissions between now and 2050\, yet MA’s Building Sector Report of the MA 2050 Decarbonization Roadmap Study doesn’t even mention it. \nConsidering the goal is for Massachusetts to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050\, you just can’t do this without considering the entire picture including embodied carbon. \nGiven this critical knowledge\, we must prioritize solving this challenge in order to ensure we meet the global goals needed in the face of our shared climate emergency. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What can I expect from this summit? \nTo gain a better understanding of the complete carbon picture in buildings and why it is so important to pay attention to. You will learn ways building designers are reducing operational and embodied carbon today in Massachusetts. Discover tangible strategies municipalities can implement in the short and long terms. Have an opportunity to hear from and share initiatives with other municipal leaders. \nWho is involved? \nBuilt Environment Plus\, with sponsors Eversource + Mass Save & MassCEC\, is partnering with the Boston Society for Architecture\, the local Carbon Leadership Forum hub\, MCAN\, MAPC\, NEEP\, SierraClub\, Mothers Out Front and RMI to pull this together. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenters & Host\n \n\n\nJulie Janiski\, Presenter\nPartner | BuroHappold Engineering \n\nJulie Janiski is partner in Buro Happold’s Boston office where she leads integrated teams of engineers\, designers\, analysts\, and subject-matter experts to deliver the highest performance projects. SUMMARY:The Materials Petal — Material Re-Use Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:The Living Building Challenge Materials Petal can be\, well\, challenging. Tracking all those materials\, vetting material and component inputs for Red List chemicals\, tracking the locations of product manufacture or assembly\, it is a lot. However\, there is one part of the Materials petal that does not get as much attention\, even though it can have profound environmental effects. \nRe-used materials in an LBC project can bypass most of the documentation requirements defined in the Materials imperatives. And can reduce environmental damage from extraction or production as well as greatly reducing the embodied carbon of a project. This can include whole buildings\, re-used on site\, or individual products repurposed from another project. \nThis roundtable discussion will start with a short introduction by Matthew St. Onge\, Executive Director of Boston Building Resources on how that organization helps save and set up the re-use of building materials and casework for sale to homeowners and others in the Boston area. Matthew’s intro will kick off a discussion of how to save and re-use materials and how re-used materials fit into the design and construction process. \n  \nSPEAKERS \nMatthew St. Onge is the Executive Director of Boston Building Resources\, a community based center for learning and teaching about buildings and renovation\, as well as a center for building materials re-use. \nDiAnn Tufts and Jim Newman are co-facilitators of the New England Living Future Collaborative. Both are Living Future Ambassadors. \n  \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nTo understand how your peers have saved or re-used materials on projects\nTo engage with the BBR as both a source and sink for materials\nTo gain understanding of the materials re-use imperative of the Living Building Challenge\nTo test the process of re-using materials on a project.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n *Roundtables are FREE for Built Environment Plus Members. SUMMARY:Dangers of PFAS Chemicals in the Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:BE IN THE KNOW\n \n \n \n \n \n Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of thousands of chemicals that are found in a wide range of building products\, including roofing\, paints and coatings\, sealants\, caulks\, adhesives\, fabrics and more. PFAS provide desirable functions such as weatherproofing\, corrosion prevention\, lubrication\, friction reduction\, and grease and water resistance\, but they don’t break down\, and can bioaccumulate in the soil\, water\, and even in living things. Health studies of some PFAS show them to be hazardous to humans\, with documented effects including kidney and testicular cancer\, elevated cholesterol\, liver disease\, decreased fertility\, and thyroid problems. \nA recently released report\, “Building a Better World: Eliminating Unnecessary PFAS in Building Materials” by researchers at the Green Science Policy Institute\, provides an introduction to this class of chemicals\, and shows they’re ubiquitous in products used in our sector. The good news is that work done by the AEC community over the last decade to drive the market toward healthier materials has resulted in a plethora of transparency labels and optimized products\, so the transformation framework needed to accelerate the reduction of PFAS in building products is in place. Regulations\, on both the state and federal level\, are also under development\, and when enacted\, should provide a clear signal to manufacturers to eliminate PFAS in certain consumer products\, and develop safer alternatives. \nThe goal of the session is to help all interested parties understand where PFAS might be found\, develop strategies to eliminate them in their work\, and illuminate the long term efforts needed to identify safer alternatives for use in buildings. In addition to presentations by experts\, small group sessions will be used to ensure everyone has an opportunity to engage and increase their understanding. \nPrior to the workshop: It is recommended participants review the Green Science Policy Institute Report on this page\, as well as\, the video on the hazards of PFAS. \n  \n  \nThis event is approved for the following continuing education credits: \n\n1.5 LU/HSW AIA credits\n1.5 General LFA CE credits\n\n \n  \nWorking Agenda: \n\nWelcome by BE+ Clean Water Action\nIntroduction – Integrated Ecostrategy\nOverview of the Problem – Green Science Policy Institute\n#1: Prioritization\n#2: Action\nClosing\n\n  \nSpeakers: \n\nMeredith Elbaum\, Executive Director of Built Environment Plus\nLaura Spark\, Sr. Policy Advocate at Clean Water Action (MA)\nHannah Ray\, Ph.D\, Science and Policy Fellow at Green Science Policy Institute\nCharley Stevenson\, Principal at Integrated Eco Strategy\n\n  \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nUnderstand the basics of perfluorinated chemicals and how they function in building products.\nBegin to identify PFAS in your scope of influence–in the products you make\, specify\, and/or purchase.\nDevelop an action plan for identifying PFAS in products in whatever space you practice.\nDevelop strategies for eliminating PFAS in your work and the wider building community.\n\n  \nAlternative Title: Addressing PFAS in the Built Environment for Public and Environmental Health \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n READ THIS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n WATCH THIS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HOST\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n PARTNERS\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n SPONSOR\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n JOIN US\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nSCHOLARSHIP FORM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Don't let cost keep you from participating. We are focused on bringing relevant instruction to address the needs of the design\, construction\, and operations workforce in order to make this happen. \nBusinesses that participate in our offered training will develop industry leading skills in: \n\nIntegrative Design Planning and Strategies for High Performance Buildings\nCurrent Green Design Standards\nGreen Building Rating Systems\nOccupant Health & Wellness\nEnergy Efficiency & Carbon Management\nOperations and Management of Green Buildings\nCritical Leadership Thinking and Strategies\nBusiness Operations Software and Tools\nBuilding Industry Software and Tools\n\nView our training catalogue to see some of the training that would be available to you! \n  \nBoth Programs could fund up to 100% of your training! \nThe Express Program is designed to help businesses respond quickly to emerging needs and keep employees engaged. With bite-size grants for just-in-time training and no waiting periods between grants\, Express is the Workforce Training Fund’s fastest path to funding. Join us and learn more about this opportunity. More information can be found on the Express Program Website. \nAll business sizes can get funding towards training\, those with 100 or less employees in MA can get 100% covered up to $3K per person per course until $30k is reached for the calendar year\, and those with more than 100 employees can get up to 50% covered up to the same amounts per calendar year. \nWith the General Program Businesses of any size in Massachusetts can apply for up to $250\,000 of training in a 2-year period.  BE+ works with companies to develop a curriculum to meet their business goals.  This process begins with a training catalogue with nearly 200 courses. We write the application and then administer the grant on behalf of our clients. Companies then match the grant amount with the cost of employee time. \nMaking connections to green building experts through training instruction is a key perk in addition to gaining leading knowledge helping to advance our ability to create a healthy\, equitable\, and sustainable built environment. \n  \nThe Workforce Training Fund is a state fund financed entirely by Massachusetts employers\, and enacted into law in July 1998. Its purpose is to provide resources to Massachusetts businesses and workers to train current and newly hired employees. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “The Workforce Training Grant has supported Payette staff in learning new tools and skills that enables us to continue to push our designs in order to create better buildings.” \n Andrea Love\n Principal and Director of Building Science\, Payette \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “Utilizing this program for a series of whole office engagements around design excellence was a great boon to Goody Clancy because direct costs were completely covered.  The workshops\, led by Barbra Batshalom of the Sustainable Performance Institute\, were a major step forward in ensuring that all members of the firm\, including marketing\, accounting\, and support\, understand the values and goals of our sustainability/design excellence framework plan.” \n Lori Ferriss\n Director of Sustainability and Climate Action\, Goody Clancy
