SUMMARY:Pushing the Envelope: How the New MA Energy Code Will Affect Façade Design
DESCRIPTION:Owners\, architects\, and engineers are all talking about it: What do we need to know about the new energy code? And can glass buildings still be designed? The 2018 Edition of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) will go into effect in January 2021 and there will be notable changes. One of the most significant changes is requiring a minimum level of building envelope performance via the U*A calculation taking into account window wall ratio and overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value). \nThis session will start with the basics of the new code\, introduce\, and explain the new U*A calculation and why it has been included\, as well as provide case study façade scenarios that illustrate how the new code will drive better building envelope performance and affect how we think about envelope design. \nOur three-person panel has the bases covered: Rebecca Hatchadorian\, Architect and Sustainability Consultant from Arup\, will demystify the process of calculating heat transfer in the new code. Jessica Santonastaso\, Associate with Gensler\, will offer insights on how this new code might inform design decisions and systems thinking. Carl Nelson\, Code Consultant with Code Red\, will discuss timing and other code implications.

SUMMARY:Preparing for Change: Understanding Your Baseline and Setting Goals
DESCRIPTION:About the Class\nYou and your business may be eligible to take this training for FREE! Learn more about this opportunity at our Green Building Training Program website.\n \n \n \n \n \n Understanding Your Baseline and Setting Goals\nIn “Preparing for Change: Understanding Your Baseline and Setting Goals\,” participants develop an understanding of their current situation\, the challenges and barriers they face\, and the cultural and systemic dynamics that influence how they do business. They then deconstruct their workflow to identify critical changes they can put in place to achieve their business objectives. The instructor uses this highly interactive format to introduce participants to core educational principles related to change management and organizational effectiveness. \nSchedule:\n\n2 hours: Baseline and assessments\n2 hours: Establishing objectives and comprehensive\, specific changes that they need to make.\n\nThis course is part of the “Preparing for Change Course” Series\nEvery company has to implement new things – whether it is a new time sheet\, new project management software\, or a comprehensive initiative like diversity and inclusion. In these unprecedented times\, the challenges associated with change are heightened and intensified: how can a company navigate the process of change most effectively? SUMMARY:How Sustainable Are COVID-19 Mitigation Strategies for Buildings?
DESCRIPTION:A conclusion to our conversation series New Perspectives on Health & Well-being features a discussion between Dr. Joseph G. Allen (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) and the series’ building industry experts.  \nOver eight weeks of early Tuesday morning conversations\, industry experts presented an overview of a specific COVID-19 mitigation topic\, through a sustainability lens. The conversations with attendees that followed addressed issues like what building owners are asking for\, which solutions are proving most effective\, and how these strategies measure up against various sustainability imperatives. In addition to the priority of human health through reduced viral transmission\, we discussed the long-term impacts on health (like ozone and UV exposure)\, the environment (like GHG emissions from increased energy use)\, and the economy (capital as well as operational cost).  \nOptimally\, building industry professionals in practice look holistically at all aspects of impact when making decisions. So to close the conversation series\, we are bringing back all of our industry expert presenters for a final 90-minute discussion. Dr. Allen will begin with an introductory 15-minute presentation to set the stage for over an hour of discussion with the previous presenters and the building engineering and design community at large. Please join us as we debate the merits of various COVID-19 mitigation strategies\, their sustainability impacts\, and suggestions for moving forward addressing health and sustainability in the built environment. \nThis Panel Will Feature… \nAir Filtration: John Swift\, Principal\, Buro Happold Engineering \nFresh Air: Patrick Murphy\, Director of Sustainable Design\, Vanderweil Engineers \nHumidity Control: Nora McCawley\, Mechanical Engineer\, Buro Happold Engineering \nPressurization: Paul Tsang\, Director of Engineering\, Jacobs \nUV Light: Eric Edman\, Senior Associate\, BR+A Consulting Engineers \nAir Monitoring: Kathleen Hetrick\, Sr. Sustainability Engineer\, Buro Happold Engineering \nAntimicrobials: Monica Nakielski\, Dir.\, Sustainability and Enviro. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event is a two-part series. The course is arranged in this way to allow you to practice the energy modeling in between courses:\nClass 1: Aug 20th from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM\nClass 2: Sept 3rd from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM\n \n \n \n \n \n \nIntroduction to Energy Modeling with eQuest\n12 Hour Training presented by Built Environment Plus \nBuilding Energy Modeling is a versatile\, multipurpose tool that is used in new building and retrofit design\, green certification\, qualification for tax credits and utility incentives. The importance of creating energy models for a building is growing as we focus on building energy efficiency as a key strategy to fight climate change and global heating. \nLearning Objectives: After completing the course\, attendees will be able to: 1) describe how modeling is used as part of an integrative design process 2) construct simple commercial building energy models using eQuest 3) interpret the results of energy models 4) distinguish between design models and validation models \nPrerequisites and Target Audience What will students need to know or do before starting this course? This is a hands-on\, project-based course that will give you the confidence to use energy modeling on your projects. While there are no specific pre-requisites\, knowledge of the building industry and basic building science will be helpful. \nThe course will be spread across two days. At the conclusion of day one\, attendees will be asked to perform modeling exercises (aka homework) outside of class\, to be completed by the next class session. Each section will build upon previous work in class. By the end of the class\, students will have created\, run and QCed an energy model on a building of their choosing. Along the way\, we’ll touch on the uses of energy modeling in an integrated design process\, and some of the standards that apply to energy modeling such as ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G. \nNote that students will need access to a computer with the Windows operating system\, and administrative rights to be able to load the eQuest software.  \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Detailed Agenda\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Day 1Day 2\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Day 19:30 AM – Start• Introductions• Uses of Energy Simulation• Overview of eQuest• Intro to Our Project• Setting up Building Geometry \n12:30 – 1PM Lunch Break• Internal Loads• HVAC systems• Energy Targets• Parametric Runs \n4:00 PM – Finished for the Day \nGoal for Day 11) Download and install eQuest2) Get a general familiarity with the eQuest interface3) Set up our Model in Wizard Mode4) Identify an Energy Target for our project5) Run Parametics to identify three energy saving strategies \n \n \n \n \n \n Day 29:30 AM – Start• Recap\, Q & A• Intro to Detailed Mode• Tips and Tricks•Creating Code Baseline \n12:30 – 1PM Lunch Break• Working Session• Modeling Uncommon Systems• Quality Control• Wrap up \n4:00 PM – Finished for the Day \nGoals for Day 21) Move into to Detailed Mode2) Create your Code Baseline3) QC Your Results4) Learn some tips and tricks \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Green Building Training Program Information\n This course is now funded through the Commonwealth Workforce Training Fund’s Small Business Direct Access Program (SBDAP). If you are a small\, Massachusetts-based business that employs 100 people or less\, you and your employees may be eligible to take this training session for free!
