SUMMARY:Intro to Sustainable Acoustics
DESCRIPTION:Acoustics is a critical component in providing a comfortable listening environment for users and is recognized by several building rating systems for sustainability and health including LEED\, WELL\, Fitwel\, and Passive House. This session presents an overview of acoustic principles and various ways in which sustainable design can be applied to acoustics to extend green design concepts. We will discuss:\n· The ABCs of architectural acoustics and the importance of proper acoustic design to the comfort and wellness of occupants across different types of building uses.\n· We will discuss design strategies to help achieve the acoustics requirements of various building rating systems throughout the design and construction process.\n· We will discuss synergies of acoustical design with other green building strategies – such as environmentally friendly materials\, smarter use of energy\, water and material resources and improved indoor environmental conditions – and potential trade offs. \nAbout the Presenter: KRISTEN MURPHY\, LEED AP BD+CMichigan native Kristen Murphy is an acoustics consultant providing architectural acoustics\, mechanical systems noise and vibration control\, and environmental noise consulting for educational\, healthcare\, performing arts\, commercial\, and residential projects. Her experience includes work on more than 100 architectural acoustics and noise control projects\, for which she conducted field measurements\, evaluated acoustical criteria\, and provided acoustical recommendations for room finishes\, sound isolation construction\, and mechanical noise mitigation

SUMMARY:Breakfast and Learn: LEED Pilot Credit 124 - Performance-Based Indoor Air Quality Design & Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Anurag Goel and Dr. Marwa Zaatari of enVerid Systems will be presenting on LEED Pilot Credit 124 – Performance-Based Indoor Air Quality Design & Assessment and the ASHRAE 62.1 – Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP). \nInstead of continuously replacing indoor air with outside air to expel indoor-generated contaminants and manage indoor air quality (IAQ)\, indoor air can be cleaned using regenerative sorbents. By cleansing the indoor air\, sorbent-based air cleaning minimizes the amount of outside air required (by 60-80% versus VRP) to maintain IAQ\, thereby reducing the load on HVAC systems and achieving double-digit energy savings.\nenVerid’s HVAC Load Reduction (HLR) technology uses patented molecular air cleaning sorbents in compliance with LEED Pilot Credit 124\, ASHRAE 62.1 IAQP\, and ASHRAE 145.2\, in lieu of outdated\, inefficient\, and costly ventilation methods in compliance with ASHRAE 62.1 Ventilation Rate Procedure (VRP).

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Cross Laminated Timber
DESCRIPTION:Join our friends at Arup for a morning of discussions about using Mass Timber in building construction. Timber is the only renewable building material and is a part of a low carbon future. It is strong and light\, making it easy to transport and erect. It can also be machined to very high tolerances\, making it ideal for prefabrication. New mass timber products such as Cross Laminated Timber (CLT)\, combined with engineered timber systems of Glulam and Nail Laminated Timber (NLT)\, and recent advances in computer-controlled manufacturing\, now make it an attractive choice for construction in a variety of building types from residential to offices. Proposed revisions to the IBC could allow mass timber construction up to 18 stories. \n\nPresenters\nDavid Barber\nDavid is a Principal and fire engineer at Arup. David has been involved with research and design of timber structures for fire for over 20 years\, assisting with fire testing and development into new timber technologies\, authoring fire safety design guides for construction and completing fire safety design for mid and high-rise timber buildings. David is currently working on Framework in Portland Oregon\, a new 12 level mixed-used and residential development that was a joint winner of the USDA Tall Wood Building Competition. \nPatrick McCafferty\nPatrick is an Associate Principal with Arup and a lecturer at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
