SUMMARY:Worcester Presinar: From Asphalt to Green Infrastructure: Transforming Surface Parking
DESCRIPTION:Join Us\nJoin the Central Massachusetts USGBC community for an evening of green building exploration and discussion. At the Sustainability Hub\, watch the following webinar and discuss your practice and experience with those in the room as it relates to the webinar. RSVP for us to save you a seat at the Sustainability Hub’s viewing room. Thank you for supporting the mission and community in Central Massachusetts!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGBCI: 0920010816\nThis archived webinar highlights innovations in sustainability practices organizations can implement for surface lots and greening the neighboring community. In the United States\, 4 million acres of land has been cleared to create 400 million parking spaces. Conventional parking lot designs create a host of problems for cities and the environment including water pollution\, heat island\, air quality issues and compared with buildings\, lots have received very little design innovation. Looking at parking lot design in a new light allows an organization to take advantage of sustainable innovations.\n\nAbout\n\n\n\n\n\nAn evolution in parking lot design is upon us to harness the massive potential of these vast open spaces in our cities and communities. Through the use of solar canopies\, a parking space can generate enough electricity to power an electric vehicle for 9\,000 miles per year. A single tree can clean the contaminants out of the water that runs off from four parking spaces. Permeable pavements and bioswales can retain and manage stormwater surges which protect the local water shed and save energy. Review this archived webinar to learn how your organization can save money and enhance your sustainable actions. This course offers three case studies each demonstrating ROI from implementing sustainable practices.\nLike what you see? For related courses\, check out the playlist that this course is featured in:\n\nCMP: SITES AP playlist\nGBCI Rating Systems playlist\n\n\n\n\nObjectives\n\nIllustrate various ways to integrate with the surrounding neighborhood and create communal spaces.\nDemonstrate how to mitigate the water and heat island issues that are damaging to local ecosystems.\nExplain various ways to generate additional incomes.\nIdentify innovations to mitigate the water and heat island issues that are damaging to local ecosystems.\n\n\n\n\n____________________________________________________________________\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: The Sustainability Hub is located at 912 Main Street\, Worcester\, MA\, 01610. Parking is available across the street from the Sustainability Hub\, and please be sure to place the attached Parking Pass in your front windshield. As a safety precaution please use the painted crosswalk to access the Sustainability Hub. Further street parking can befound on Hawthorne Street and Main Street. \n\n\n\nClick here to download the PARKING PASS !

SUMMARY:Advocacy Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Legislation and policy drives our industry\, but who drives changes in legislation and law? \nJoin our Advocacy committee as they interpret\, suggest updates to\, and advocate for advances in laws and policy related to green buildings. All are welcome to join in this high level discussion. \n\nAlthough the legislative session has ended\, we are still tracking our current priorites: \n\nPACE Clean Energy Financing – we were victorious in attaining PACE for Massachusetts in 2016! Now: how can we bring this new tool to bear on green building projects throughout the Commonwealth?\nNet Zero Energy building code – how can we  shift the conversation on codes? How can we support municipalities who are leading – like Cambridge with their Net Zero Action Plan?\nNet Metering Improvements – we were able to engineer reform of net metering in 2016\, but we know it was a temporary fix. How do we position our advocacy efforts to ensure we see progress in early 2017?\n\nAlso\, we are tracking other initiatives including: \n\nBuilding Energy Benchmarking (BERDO & BEUDO)\nThe MA “Stretch Code” for energy efficiency\nThe greening of the MLS and the residential market transformation\nEnergy efficiency education

SUMMARY:Presinar - Better Building Materials
DESCRIPTION:GBCI: 0920013675\nWilliam Shakespeare said ‘All the world’s a stage’. In our day to day lives that stage is the built environment. According to the EPA\, we spend 90% of our time indoors. That means that our living\, working\, playing\, learning – it’s all done indoors. The economic activity in our world is also effected\, in large part\, by the construction\, operation\, and disposal of our shared built environments. Materials make the built environment possible\, and the choices made of which materials to use have massive consequences for human health and the ecosystem we live in. This one hour course will empower project teams and design professionals to take leading roles in using materials selection to promote human health and protect the environment.\nCourse Objectives:\n1       Describe the environmental and human health consequences of building materials. 2       Discuss the evolution of green building perspectives on building materials including recent refinements to LEED v4\, and the inclusion of credits with a focus on disclosure such as MR credit Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Sourcing of Raw Materials in LEED for BD+C and ID+C. 3       Explain the intent of LEED v4 credits focused on life-cycle impacts in BD+C and ID+C\, such as MR credit Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Environmental Product Declarations. 4       Explain how the Health Product Declaration (HPD) can qualify products to contribute under MR credit Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Material Ingredients in LEED v4 for BD+C and ID+C.\nCredits: 1 AIA 1 GBCI (LEED Specific BD+C\, ID+C\, GA)\nThe OPR can have a broad impact on the new LEED v4 credits. Join us for a 1 hour course to see how foundational a OPR can be to the new Integrative Process credit. We will go over the outline of a OPR including strategies for discovery and development of the document.\nCourse Objectives\n\nDiscover the broad impact that a robust Owners Project Requirements (OPR) can have to reach high levels of performance and sustainability in projects.\nUnderstand how the OPR is a foundational document in the new Integrative Process credit under LEED BD+C v4 and how the OPR fits into the overall rating system.\nList components of and write an outline of an OPR that will meet the requirements of the Integrative Process credit in LEED BD+C v4 including strategies for discovery and development of the document.\nUnderstand how to structure an OPR to also comply with LEED BD+C v4 Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning credits.\n\nCredits: 1.0 AIA\, 1 GBCI (BD+C\, GA Specific)

SUMMARY:Emerging Professionals of Massachusetts Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:EMERGING PROFESSIONALS OF MASSACHUSETTS (EPMA)\nThe EPMA Committee is a great venue for becoming more engaged with green building community and forming meaningful connections with colleagues across the industry. Our monthly meetings are open to anyone interested in becoming more involved. \n\nPresentation: Sustainability Challenges in Healthcare and Biotech\nHospitals and research institutions are some of the most energy and waste intensive built environments\, with unique challenges in improving their energy efficiency. This problem is especially important when considering Boston’s unique makeup\, where hospitals consist of 10% of the largest buildings in the city and create 25% of GhGs. What barriers do these spaces need to overcome\, and what does a ‘green’ Hospital look like? Nathan Kingery-Gallagher\, former researcher at MGH and HMS\, introduces the problems these buildings face and his recommendations on how to address them. \n\nAbout the Presenter\nNathan Kingery-Gallagher has spent over five years in research at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before beginning his career as a sustainability professional. He is looking to change the way medical and biotech institutions use energy by founding Wicked Green Research\, Sustainability Solutions in Healthcare. \nMEETING AGENDAS TYPICALLY INCLUDE:\n\nShort presentation from one of our members about their work in the green building industry\nBrainstorming new initiatives and events\nUpdates on broader Chapter initiatives and events\nStrategy and planning for upcoming EPMA-hosted events\n\nPlease reach out to our committee chairs or attend an upcoming meeting if you have a great idea for an EP event that you would like see come to life\, or if you are just interested in becoming more involved! \n  \nA BIT MORE ABOUT EPMA:\nChair: Jenna Dancewicz \nVice Co-Chairs: Jasmine Abdollahi & Aminah McNulty \nThe USGBC Massachusetts Emerging Professionals (EPMA) is a group of green building professionals who are relatively new to the industry\, inclusive of students fresh out of college\, young professionals in the industry\, graduate students\, and more seasoned professionals simply new to the sustainable field. \nEPMA strives to become engaged with the greater Boston green community through educational and career development events\, networking nights\, volunteer programs and other events which promote the conservation\, regeneration and stewardship of natural resources through sustainable building practices. \n\nSOME OF EPMA’S EVENTS:\n\nBuilding Tours\nSustainable Bike Tour\nSustainable Dinner\nNetworking Nights\nCheck out our calendar for the latest schedule!\n\n\nPlease RSVP to the event as soon as possible! SUMMARY:Worcester Presinar: Buildingomics: The Holistic Impact of Working in a Green Certified Building on Cognitive Function
Thank you for supporting the mission and community in Central Massachusetts!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGBCI: 0920011992\n\nAbout\nThe health and productivity benefits of Green buildings are becoming increasingly well understood\, particularly in light of The CogFx Study\, which demonstrated the impact of Green buildings and enhanced ventilation on cognitive function. This presentation takes these findings from the lab to the real-world. 10 buildings from around the U.S. were recruited to participate in a week-long building assessment survey. In each building\, 12 participants completed daily health surveys and cognitive tests. We will highlight the elements of building design\, operation and maintenance in green certified and non-certified buildings that result in cognitive and health improvements\, and introduce the concept of “buildingomics”\, a holistic approach to examining the complexity of factors in a building that influence human health. Lastly\, this session will answer some of the common questions building practitioners face: what are the building factors that influence health and productivity\, what is the evidence supporting these relationships\, and what can my business do to optimize these factors for health?\nLike what you see? For related courses\, check out the playlists that this course is featured in:\n\nCMP: LEED AP ID+C playlist\nCMP: WELL AP playlist\n\n\n\nObjectives\n\nUpon completion\, participants will be able to identify the different pathways that cause health impacts in buildings\nUpon completion\, participants will be able to explain to others how green buildings and enhanced ventilation affect health and productivity in the real-world\nUpon completion\, participants will learn the benefits of healthy work environments\nUpon completion\, participants will be able to make smart choices in their business to ensure healthy and productive workplaces\n\n____________________________________________________________________\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: The Sustainability Hub is located at 912 Main Street\, Worcester\, MA\, 01610.
All are welcome to join in this high-level discussion. \n\nGeneral Questions: How can this committee reach out and build value for practitioners and the larger community? How can we accommodate both detailed issue-based discussions as well as more inviting\, general discussions for new members?\n\nConnecting our priorities to other national/local legislative agendas (USGBC\, ILFI) \nRoles on Committee\, General Communication\, Decision Making\n\nWe look forward to seeing you there!\nHere is some background on what the Chapter has been working on recently:\nWe are still tracking our current priorities::\n\nPACE Clean Energy Financing – we were victorious in attaining PACE for Massachusetts in 2016! How do we position our advocacy efforts to ensure we see progress in early 2017?\n\nAlso\, we are tracking other initiatives including:\n\nBuilding Energy Benchmarking (BERDO & BEUDO)\nThe MA “Stretch Code” for energy efficiency\nThe greening of the MLS and the residential market transformation\nEnergy efficiency education
