SUMMARY:Grow your Leadership Skills in the Sustainability Field
DESCRIPTION:Note: This course is a 2 part series\, both dates are included in the price.\nPart 1: March 25th from 9 AM to 12 PM\nPart 2: April 1st from 9 AM to 12 PM\nDo you run meetings? Manage a team? Want to be promoted to a position where you manage people? Are you passionate about something and want to get other people on-board?  You can do all of these things more successfully if you develop your personal leadership skills.\nIn this course\, participants develop a heightened self-awareness of their particular leadership style\, an understanding of where they can strengthen their skills and the ability to adapt their style to different situations.  If you are working with a team\, whether in-house management\, or as part of a large project client/consultant team you need these skills. Many sustainability champions have strong technical backgrounds but very little training in communication\, negotiation and leadership skills that would enable them to drive alignment and effectiveness in their teams or firms. This workshop helps employees at all levels develop strong skills to define objectives\, get people moving together toward common goals\, empower those around them\, deal with conflicts\, and contribute toward a positive team culture. \nMeet the Lecturer: Barbra Batshalom\nWith a background in social psychology\, architecture\, and 20+ years of sustainability consulting\, Barbra brings a unique perspective engaging the human dynamics of decision-making and creative collaboration to technical work. She helps companies all over the world to institutionalize sustainability and improve performance and profitability. She has worked with local governments and institutions to create policies and programs that require green building and net-zero communities and led the development of the industry’s first (and only) certification program that evaluates the capability of design/construction firms to deliver consistent\, high-quality sustainability services. She also teaches Sustainable Real Estate Development at Brandeis University’s International Business School. \n\nChapter members get a discount on this course! \n\nIf you are a member of USGBC MA just use your email as a promotional code before checkout. Not sure how? See a tutorial. \nBenefits for all membership types include a 15% discount on most of our events. Please note membership with USGBC National is NOT membership with USGBC MA. SUMMARY:Central MA Presinar: Pioneering the Way to LEED v4
DESCRIPTION:The Library! At Bown Crossing project is one of the first endeavors to pursue certification under the new LEED v4 BD+C rating system. We invite you to explore the building design concepts and construction implementation regarding both design and LEED in an in-depth analysis. \nThe project team chose to implement LEED v4 before the registration deadline was established\, resulting in a truly pioneering effort to certify before most projects considered taking the plunge. This choice was a collaborative decision between the design team\, construction team\, and key stakeholders. \nIn this course\, lessons learned from this project to achieve LEED v4 BD+C: New Construction Silver Certification are analyzed to provide current and future project teams with best practices for implementing the new rating system effectively and efficiently. v4 is here\, but there’s nothing to fear! \n\n\nObjectives\n\nIdentify challenges that the Bown Library! project team faced when pursuing the Low-emitting materials credit of the LEED v4 BD+C rating system.\nExamine how the Integrative Process credit of the LEED v4 BD+C rating system effected the pre-design\, design\, and construction phases of the Bown Library! project.\nList the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization credits of the LEED v4 BD+C rating system that the project team chose to pursue during the construction phase kick-off meeting.\nApply the best practice strategies identified in this course to future LEED v4 BD+C rating system project(s).\n\n\n\nChapter members get a discount on this course! \n\nIf you are a member of USGBC MA just use your email as a promotional code before checkout. SUMMARY:EPMA: 2019 Charles River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join EPMA on April 27th for our Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup! Over 3\,000 volunteers come each year to pick up litter\, remove invasive species\, and assist with park maintenance. Residents are drawn to the popular Charles River Cleanup from a desire to give back to their community while enjoying the beauty and wildlife along the Charles River. Volunteers build on the connections they establish during this day of stewardship by returning to the Charles to exercise\, play\, and enjoy nature throughout the year. \nThe Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup builds on a national effort as part of American Rivers’ National River Cleanup®\, which to date\, has removed over 25 million pounds of trash from America’s waterways. In 2016 and 2017\, the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup was recognized by American Rivers for the Most Volunteers Mobilized. \nThis year\, we will be joining volunteers to remove trash and debris that has accumulated over the winter along and around the coast line at Lederman Park. Join us after at Fielder Field where there will be a free picnic for all volunteers! \nThis event has been organized by the Emerging Professionals Committee (EPMA). Join us every 3rd Monday of the month for our committee meetings.

SUMMARY:Designing a Carbon Free Boston
DESCRIPTION:The Green Ribbon Commission (GRC) released Carbon Free Boston in January 2019\, setting forth an ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. Because two-thirds of GHG emissions come from buildings\, and because the majority of the 2050 building stock was built before 1950\, the AEC professions have a large role to play in reaching this goal. \nJoin the BSA/AIA on Thursday\, May 9 to hear more about the report and the role that building design plays in helping Boston reach its goals. The US Green Building Council Massachusetts chapter will be represented by our Executive Director\, Meredith Elbaum\, who will speak about our recent report of the cost of building net zero throughout the state. The morning will then turn to best case practices in low energy buildings in urban settings. \nSpeakers: \nMichael Walsh\, Technical Lead\, Carbon Free Boston and Research Assistant Professor\, Boston University \nMeredith Elbaum AIA\, LEED AP\, US Green Building Council -Massachusetts Chapter \nGabrielle Aitcheson AIA\, CPHC\, Project Architect + Sustainability Leader\, ICON Architecture \nRebecca Hatchadorian\, LEED AP BD+C\, WELL AP\, Associate\, Sustainability Leader\, Arup \n2 LU/HSW AIA credits are available. \nImage courtesy of Resonant Energy

SUMMARY:Living Product Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Greg Norris\, Chief Scientist at the International Living Future Institute \nImagine products that regenerate our natural systems and improve life. The International Living Future Institute has been inviting manufacturers to use the Living Product Challenge framework to rethink the way products are made. Instead of trying to be “less bad\,” ILFI is inviting manufacturers to creat goods that have a positive impact. Using the Living Product Challenge framework\, we can create Living Products that are: \n\nHealthy and free of toxins\nSocially responsible and respect the rights of workers\nNet positive and benefit both people and the environment\n\nGreg Norris\, ILFI’s Chief Scientist\, will present this exciting framework\, along with the concept of Handprinting. \nHandprints measure positive impacts that an actor causes in relation to business as usual. Designers of products\, users of products\, both organizations and individuals\, can all create handprints. The ability to generate\, measure\, and extend our handprints opens up the possibility for any organization or individual to become “Net Positive”\, giving more than we take in relation to each category of impact. \n\nChapter members get a discount on this course! \n\nOur members support our close-knit community of passionate practitioners. SUMMARY:Tour a Zero Net-Energy Low Carbon House
DESCRIPTION:Houses are not being built like they used to be.  New houses have the capability of having no electric bills\, but at the same time being all electric (i.e. use no fossil fuels).  Sounds impossible\, but it isn’t when using new building products and technologies that improve energy efficiency and that generate their own clean solar power.  Join ReVision Energy and USGBC MA for a tour of a coastal net-zero energy home in Rockport MA. \n\nSee how a 52 solar panels (16.64kW) solar system was incorporated into the design of a new 3300 square foot house.\nLearn what “net-metering” and “grid-tied” and various other terms/components of a solar system mean or look like.\nLearn how all-electric\, air-source heat pumps can efficiently both heat and cool your house.  What do these systems look like? Are they quiet? Do they really work? What are the design options/limitations?\nHow are houses being insulated to increase energy efficiency?\nHow are energy loads being reduced from lighting and appliances?\nWhat is an ERV system and how does it improve indoor air quality?\nMeet the homeowner and various members of the building team that designed\, built or provided building products for the house.\n\nAt this event\, dinner will be served and is included in the ticket price. Once you register for the event\, we will send you the address\, as the homeowner has requested to keep the location private.  \nThis event is sponsored by ReVision Energy.
