SUMMARY:EPMA: 2019 Charles River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join EPMA on April 27th for our Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup! Over 3\,000 volunteers come each year to pick up litter\, remove invasive species\, and assist with park maintenance. Residents are drawn to the popular Charles River Cleanup from a desire to give back to their community while enjoying the beauty and wildlife along the Charles River. Volunteers build on the connections they establish during this day of stewardship by returning to the Charles to exercise\, play\, and enjoy nature throughout the year. \nThe Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup builds on a national effort as part of American Rivers’ National River Cleanup®\, which to date\, has removed over 25 million pounds of trash from America’s waterways. In 2016 and 2017\, the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup was recognized by American Rivers for the Most Volunteers Mobilized. \nThis year\, we will be joining volunteers to remove trash and debris that has accumulated over the winter along and around the coast line at Lederman Park. Join us after at Fielder Field where there will be a free picnic for all volunteers! \nThis event has been organized by the Emerging Professionals Committee (EPMA). Join us every 3rd Monday of the month for our committee meetings.

SUMMARY:Designing a Carbon Free Boston
DESCRIPTION:The Green Ribbon Commission (GRC) released Carbon Free Boston in January 2019\, setting forth an ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. Because two-thirds of GHG emissions come from buildings\, and because the majority of the 2050 building stock was built before 1950\, the AEC professions have a large role to play in reaching this goal. \nJoin the BSA/AIA on Thursday\, May 9 to hear more about the report and the role that building design plays in helping Boston reach its goals. The US Green Building Council Massachusetts chapter will be represented by our Executive Director\, Meredith Elbaum\, who will speak about our recent report of the cost of building net zero throughout the state. The morning will then turn to best case practices in low energy buildings in urban settings. \nSpeakers: \nMichael Walsh\, Technical Lead\, Carbon Free Boston and Research Assistant Professor\, Boston University \nMeredith Elbaum AIA\, LEED AP\, US Green Building Council -Massachusetts Chapter \nGabrielle Aitcheson AIA\, CPHC\, Project Architect + Sustainability Leader\, ICON Architecture \nRebecca Hatchadorian\, LEED AP BD+C\, WELL AP\, Associate\, Sustainability Leader\, Arup \n2 LU/HSW AIA credits are available. \nImage courtesy of Resonant Energy

SUMMARY:Living Product Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Greg Norris\, Chief Scientist at the International Living Future Institute \nImagine products that regenerate our natural systems and improve life. The International Living Future Institute has been inviting manufacturers to use the Living Product Challenge framework to rethink the way products are made. Instead of trying to be “less bad\,” ILFI is inviting manufacturers to creat goods that have a positive impact. Using the Living Product Challenge framework\, we can create Living Products that are: \n\nHealthy and free of toxins\nSocially responsible and respect the rights of workers\nNet positive and benefit both people and the environment\n\nGreg Norris\, ILFI’s Chief Scientist\, will present this exciting framework\, along with the concept of Handprinting. \nHandprints measure positive impacts that an actor causes in relation to business as usual. Designers of products\, users of products\, both organizations and individuals\, can all create handprints. The ability to generate\, measure\, and extend our handprints opens up the possibility for any organization or individual to become “Net Positive”\, giving more than we take in relation to each category of impact. \n\nChapter members get a discount on this course! \n\nOur members support our close-knit community of passionate practitioners. Join us in transforming the built environment to sustainable design practices. SUMMARY:Tour a Zero Net-Energy Low Carbon House
DESCRIPTION:Houses are not being built like they used to be.  New houses have the capability of having no electric bills\, but at the same time being all electric (i.e. use no fossil fuels).  Sounds impossible\, but it isn’t when using new building products and technologies that improve energy efficiency and that generate their own clean solar power.  Join ReVision Energy and USGBC MA for a tour of a coastal net-zero energy home in Rockport MA. \n\nSee how a 52 solar panels (16.64kW) solar system was incorporated into the design of a new 3300 square foot house.\nLearn what “net-metering” and “grid-tied” and various other terms/components of a solar system mean or look like.\nLearn how all-electric\, air-source heat pumps can efficiently both heat and cool your house.  What do these systems look like? Are they quiet? Do they really work? What are the design options/limitations?\nHow are houses being insulated to increase energy efficiency?\nHow are energy loads being reduced from lighting and appliances?\nWhat is an ERV system and how does it improve indoor air quality?\nMeet the homeowner and various members of the building team that designed\, built or provided building products for the house.\n\nAt this event\, dinner will be served and is included in the ticket price. Once you register for the event\, we will send you the address\, as the homeowner has requested to keep the location private.  \nThis event is sponsored by ReVision Energy. SUMMARY:Healthy Building Summit 2019
DESCRIPTION:At our 2019 Healthy Buildings Summit\, we’ll learn how Harvard is turning research into action by discussing the science behind our building products and how these materials affect our bodies and the environment\, as well as suggestions of chemical classes we should be working to eliminate. Together\, we can leave this summit informed and ready to pursue the next steps to creating a healthier Boston. \nA year ago\, our expert panel came together with a mission to inform architects\, designers\, and corporations how vital healthy buildings are for improving financial costs\, the environment\, and the health of each and every individual living and working in these buildings. At the 2018 Healthy Building Summit\, we heard about the multitude of ways that buildings can affect our bodies and environment\, from changing the air we breathe to introducing different chemicals into our environment. \nIn the year since our last Healthy Building Summit\, we have been busy keeping this conversation alive: we formed a Health and Wellness Round Table. We learned about Well V2\, heard about the Cognitive effects of indoor air quality\, and discussed flame retardants in building products. We heard from leading manufacturers about their commitment to promoting transparency\, eliminating chemicals of concern\, and to evolving the Mindful Materials program. Now that we’re informed of the issues and understand the many facets that come into creating healthy buildings\, we now face the next issue: how do we act out this knowledge and drive change? \nJoin us at Harvard University on June 24th as we roll up our sleeves and get to work on improving materials transparency and eliminating chemicals of concern from the built environment. \nAgenda:9:00am -9:30am Networking Breakfast9:30am – 11:00am – The Science\, Industry Check-in and Harvard’s Example11:00am – 12:00pm  – Working Together12:00pm – 12:30pm Wrap-up \nCEUs Available: 3 LU/HSW AIA credits \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Contact Us for More Information About Sponsorship\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Name\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Email Address\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Message\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 15 + 14 = \n \n \n Submit
