SUMMARY:Buildings and Energy Roundtable | Net Zero Stretch Code: Defining Our Vision
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we hold a working session to develop consensus around what we believe are the core concepts that should be included in the Net Zero Stretch Code. This drafted proposal could become the standard that which other proposals are compared to. \nWe will review precedent net zero codes and standards\, gather input from municipal stakeholders\, and outline what we believe are the core elements that should be included in the Net Zero Stretch Code. This will not be a “code language” crafting event. We will focus on big picture core concepts. \n\nThis roundtable is free for members. \n\nOur members support our close-knit community of passionate practitioners. Join us in transforming the built environment to sustainable design practices. \nBenefits for all membership types are the same with a few exceptions\, including a 15% discount on most events. Please note membership with USGBC National is NOT membership with USGBC MA. Not sure if you are a member of USGBC MA? Check here.

SUMMARY:Living Building Challenge: Designing for the People in a Living Building
DESCRIPTION:This session looks at the Living Building Challenge (LBC) petals and imperatives that directly affect people – health\, sense of self\, and sense of delight. We will look specifically at the less technical and more empathetic petals in the LBC: Place\, Health and Happiness\, Equity\, and Beauty are LBC petals where human-ness lives. We want to explore the potential of these petal areas\, while practicing some deep caring and empathy with exercises designed to bring these ideas to life. Participants will leave knowing that the Living Building Challenge is as much about enhancing life as it is about saving energy. Participants will gain an understanding of where they can use the guidance of the Living Building Challenge to make life truly beautiful and… more alive. \nA basic introduction to the Living Building Challenge Petal and Imperative structure is recommended for this course. \nThis event is organized by the Living Future Collaborative New England. \n \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the design opportunities inherent in the non-technical LBC imperatives\nDefine the most powerful places to put design energy\nPractice using design thinking to meet the intent of the LBC goals\nEngage with the power of Place to drive design.

SUMMARY:2020 Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Date: Jan 28th\, 2020 | Time: 6:00 – 9:00pm | Location: Payette HQ | 290 Congress St\, Boston\, MA\, 02210 \nIt’s that time of the year again\, when we all come together to celebrate the volunteers\, members\, and successes that make our USGBC MA community amazing! We’re ringing in the new year with food and drinks and an awards ceremony for our members\, as well as wrapping up voting for the Board of Directors and the organizational name change. \nThis past year we have accomplished a lot together\, such as advocating for zero energy policies\, launching inaugural conference Design 4 People\, and awarding King Open/Cambridge Street Upper Schools & Community Complex the title of 2019 Green Building of the Year at our Green Building Showcase. \nThe Annual General Meeting is also when we conclude two voting sessions: the 2020 Board of Director’s election and the vote for changing the organizational name to “Built Environment Plus”. Voting is limited to USGBC MA members only and will occur at the Annual General Meeting on January 28th\, beginning at 6:00 PM. In order for the organizational name change to occur\, two-thirds of our current members must vote in favor of this change. Proxy ballots for both votes will be sent by email to all members on January 13th. More information will be released soon about the nature of the organizational name change. \nThe evening will conclude with an announcement about the results of both voting sessions.

SUMMARY:Bird Safe Design: Strategies for Designing Bird-Friendly Buildings
DESCRIPTION:** “Bird Safe Design” will now be hosted virtually in response to the increasing spread of the novel coronavirus/COVID-19. Registered attendees will receive their Zoom meeting link a few days before March 17th. **\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nThis class will review the science that explains bird collisions\, how to recognize hazards present in the built environment\, and a range of building designs that illustrate solutions. These case studies will explore many of the available strategies for reducing bird mortality; these bird-friendly strategies oftentimes bring additional value to design decisions for heat\, light\, and security. We will review regulations connected to bird-friendly design\, including the use of the LEED credit as well as current legislation that mandates safer design for birds. Techniques now in use for evaluating the relative threat level to birds of different materials are also described in this course\, along with typical results.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse objectives:\n● Identify and apply current best practices in reducing bird collisions in new design\n● Integrate bird-friendly architecture with other aspects of green design\n● Understand existing and potential legislation mandating bird-friendly design\n● Use LEED Pilot Credit #55: Reducing Bird Collisions

SUMMARY:Boost Organizational Resilience: People\, Processes\, Places Thriving in a Time of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:We are now seeing how critical organizational resilience is and how unprepared we are to deal with the human side of a crisis – from business continuity to psychological health. This webinar addresses the three pillars of resilience: People\, processes\, places\, with a focus on the people and people-related processes. We address business processes\, single points of failure\, data security\, managing people in a virtual environment and more. We will record and archive this presentation if you can not join live. \n\nIn our industry\, we think of resilience predominantly as a physical infrastructure issue – passive survivability\, uninterrupted power supply\, and managing storm surges and flooding. The other side of resilience is business continuity and the human aspect of organizational function. Our current experience with COVID-19 is truly emphasizing how critical it is to be prepared to address the human dimension and manage operations from that perspective. \nThis webinar will address the issues of enhancing organizational resilience during times of crisis in general and a pandemic in particular. In the current situation where most people are working remotely\, a variety of business processes\, and ‘cultural’ norms are adversely affected. We will discuss the three pillars of resilience: People\, processes\, places\, with a focus on the people and people-related processes. \nStaff who are in managerial or leadership positions\, will need to adapt leadership styles to accommodate the new reality of remote teams\, and cultivate a stronger sense of team membership to facilitate productivity. In addition\, staff will have the increased burden of balancing work obligations and home responsibilities (especially if they have younger children or others requiring more care). \nThe webinar will provide answers for the following questions:1.     What are the psychological principles that should guide engaging with employees throughout the process of dealing with crisis?2.     How can a “single point of failure” be avoided?3.     Which of our business processes are vulnerable to disruption?4.     How do we avoid burnout and employee turnover? \nWe will review practical “fixes” addressing issues related to communication; structuring the workday; and maintaining staff engagement. Finally\, we will review strategies for self-care\, personal resilience\, and caring for others (employees\, family members\, etc.). \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Meet the Presenter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Guy Sapirstein\n Resilience Consulting \n With a PhD in Clinical Psychology\, Guy has been on the cutting edge of applied social science for the past 20 years. Following the events of September 11\, 2001 he began collaborating on the development of models for enhancing resilience through individual\, community and organizational preparedness and response. Those models have been successfully implemented across the United States and internationally. Currently he splits his time between coaching clients on personal and organizational resilience\, helping leaders implement strategies for resilience in their organizations\, and providing resilience focused psychotherapy for individuals and couples.\n\n \nAn experienced speaker\, Guy has presented at numerous conferences including the first UN sponsored International Strategy for Disaster Reduction conference in Davos\, Switzerland.  His articles have appeared in academic journals\, trade publications and textbooks. Additionally\, he co-authored several manuals (on crisis response and interventions) that have been translated into several languages and widely distributed by IBM Corporation as part of their crisis response following disasters in the USA\, Pakistan\, China\, the Philippines and Haiti. Guy holds a PhD from the University of Connecticut and a BA in Social Studies from Bar-Ilan University in Israel.

SUMMARY:Managing Change in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Managing change is a constant in business\, but in these times\, we are faced with more and faster changes with no way to predict what will happen from day to day. Pervasive uncertainty kills productivity and morale. Successful change management results from a combination of effective leadership\, clear and targeted communication\, team building\, emotional intelligence and appropriate levels of transparency. Leaders need to create for employees as much safety and predictability as they can\, as well as some level of perceived control in their lives. SUMMARY:Against the Grain: Designing and Building with Cross Laminated Timber
DESCRIPTION:Participants will gain an understanding of the general properties\, design\, engineering\, project financing considerations\, and carbon impacts of Cross Laminated Timber construction.  \n\nArchitects\, engineers\, state\, and local climate leaders face substantial challenges with regard to meeting increasingly aggressive climate goals in the built environment. Interest in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is beginning to expand in the United States\, due to a combination of technology improvements\, emerging acceptance among building code officials\, local economic development potential\, carbon sequestration\, construction waste reduction and other benefits. An expert panel will explore the potential to harvest native northeast tree species for CLT production\, and examine design\, engineering and CLT project finance considerations. The panel will conclude with a Q&A segment\, and a brief joint exercise to help identify CLT market development priorities. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Meet the Panelists\n \n \n \n \n \n Galen Nelson\, Chief Program Officer at MassCEC\, will moderate the panel. \nDr. Peggi Clouston is a Professor of timber engineering and wood mechanics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
