SUMMARY:Pathways to Low Carbon Buildings in Somerville
DESCRIPTION:Somerville’s overlay zoning requirements can be met with Passive House or Zero Carbon. Learn about how it works.\nThe City of Somerville has adopted new requirements for high performance buildings in a number of Zoning Overlay Districts in the City. Passive House certification  and ILFI’s Zero Carbon certification are two of the key pathways to meeting these requirements. \nThis discussion will start with a presentation by Oliver Seller-Garcia from the City of Somerville about how the requirements work and what they are attempting to achieve. Oliver will be followed by Aaron Gunderson from Passive House Mass and Jacob Bloom from Cambridge Seven to talk about Passive House and Zero Carbon certifications.  \nMost of the time in this discussion will be spent on open discussion and questions about how these pathways work\, what are the issues\, and what are the benefits. SUMMARY:BSA EDI Network: What does a JUST Label mean for a firm?
DESCRIPTION:Join the Boston Society of Architects Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion Network\, in conjunction with the International Living Future Institute’s New England Collaborative and Built Environment Plus\, for a lunchtime discussion of the JUST Transparency Label for organizations. The JUST Label is a voluntary disclosure of personnel and workplace policies and realities aimed at increasing justice\, equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and transparency in organizations. The discussion will highlight four local AEC firms of different sizes\, ranging from small (S) to extra-large (XL)\, who have received the JUST 2.0 Label. Topics will include the effects of transparency within the firm\, firm leaders’ roles\, and many other topics. She works with the Integrated Water Management group\, supporting the management of New York City’s water resources and identifying cost-effective approaches to balancing regulatory and long-term sustainability goals. Hannah is the project manager for the Water Conservation and Reuse Grant Pilot Program\, the Water Conservation Challenge to Universities\, and helps promote water reuse and conservation through research and data analysis. Prior to DEP\, Hannah worked internationally for four years as an operations analyst\, where she monitored and promoted water and energy conservation projects. She has been actively engaged with climate change preparedness and working to improve Cambridge’s resiliency through city projects\, regional collaboration\, and design standards for new development projects. DESCRIPTION:A conclusion to our conversation series New Perspectives on Health & Well-being features a discussion between Dr. Joseph G. Allen (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) and the series’ building industry experts.  \nOver eight weeks of early Tuesday morning conversations\, industry experts presented an overview of a specific COVID-19 mitigation topic\, through a sustainability lens. The conversations with attendees that followed addressed issues like what building owners are asking for\, which solutions are proving most effective\, and how these strategies measure up against various sustainability imperatives. In addition to the priority of human health through reduced viral transmission\, we discussed the long-term impacts on health (like ozone and UV exposure)\, the environment (like GHG emissions from increased energy use)\, and the economy (capital as well as operational cost).  \nOptimally\, building industry professionals in practice look holistically at all aspects of impact when making decisions. So to close the conversation series\, we are bringing back all of our industry expert presenters for a final 90-minute discussion. SUMMARY:Pushing the Envelope: How the New MA Energy Code Will Affect Façade Design
DESCRIPTION:Owners\, architects\, and engineers are all talking about it: What do we need to know about the new energy code? And can glass buildings still be designed? The 2018 Edition of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) will go into effect in January 2021 and there will be notable changes. One of the most significant changes is requiring a minimum level of building envelope performance via the U*A calculation taking into account window wall ratio and overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value). \nThis session will start with the basics of the new code\, introduce\, and explain the new U*A calculation and why it has been included\, as well as provide case study façade scenarios that illustrate how the new code will drive better building envelope performance and affect how we think about envelope design. \nOur three-person panel has the bases covered: Rebecca Hatchadorian\, Architect and Sustainability Consultant from Arup\, will demystify the process of calculating heat transfer in the new code. Jessica Santonastaso\, Associate with Gensler\, will offer insights on how this new code might inform design decisions and systems thinking. SUMMARY:Against the Grain: Designing and Building with Cross Laminated Timber
DESCRIPTION:Participants will gain an understanding of the general properties\, design\, engineering\, project financing considerations\, and carbon impacts of Cross Laminated Timber construction.  \n\nArchitects\, engineers\, state\, and local climate leaders face substantial challenges with regard to meeting increasingly aggressive climate goals in the built environment. Interest in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is beginning to expand in the United States\, due to a combination of technology improvements\, emerging acceptance among building code officials\, local economic development potential\, carbon sequestration\, construction waste reduction and other benefits. An expert panel will explore the potential to harvest native northeast tree species for CLT production\, and examine design\, engineering and CLT project finance considerations. The panel will conclude with a Q&A segment\, and a brief joint exercise to help identify CLT market development priorities. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n\n\n\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Meet the Panelists\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Galen Nelson\, Chief Program Officer at MassCEC\, will moderate the panel. \nDr. Peggi Clouston is a Professor of timber engineering and wood mechanics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her current research involves engineering cross laminated timber panels from northeastern species. A registered professional engineer since 1992\, she also serves as Associate Editor of the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. \nColin Booth is the Strategic Director of Placetailor\, a Boston-based design-build-develop cooperative focused exclusively on Passive House and Zero Emissions workforce housing.  With 20 years in design\, Colin’s expertise is in the integrated design process and integrated delivery models necessary for the rapid adoption of more sustainable technologies.  \nJennifer Hardy AIA is a Senior Associate at Payette and a 2020 AIA Young Architect Award recipient.  Jennifer is currently leading a team designing a hybrid mass timber structure and exploring different ways to integrate carbon reduction into a project while enhancing design goals. \nPatrick McCafferty\, PE is the Structural Engineering Leader and a Project Director of Arup in Boston. Patrick specializes in the design of architecturally expressed structural engineering solutions across a wide spectrum of building typologies. He and his teams regularly employ mass timber design solutions on their many projects\, including for the design of the MADOT Aeronautics Division’s Regional Airport facilities recently deployed throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. \n
