SUMMARY:Buildings and Carbon
DESCRIPTION:This course will focus on climate impacts associated with carbon emissions from the built environment. It will emphasize the importance of goal setting and taking actions to manage building-related carbon emissions throughout a building’s life cycle. \nThe course will begin with an exploration of the context of climate emissions in the built environment\, covering topics such as the global carbon cycle\, whole building life cycle analysis\, operational carbon\, embodied carbon and the impact of building materials and practices\, carbon storage and buildings as carbon sinks\, the “time value” of carbon\, and a series of solutions from material selection to policy engagement for addressing the climate impact of the built environment. In particular\, the course focuses on the topic of embodied carbon\, including the framing of the built environment in the global carbon cycle and the role of carbon storage\, life cycle assessment and the time value of carbon\, strategies for reducing embodied carbon throughout a building’s design\, workflow strategies for integrating embodied carbon analysis into the design process\, and a survey of tools\, databases\, and other resources available to conduct embodied carbon analysis and make actionable decisions to reduce the embodied carbon footprint of the building. \nNext\, the course will explore applied strategies in the context of a design practice\, covering topics such as goal setting and defined metrics\, defining core questions framing carbon analysis\, carbon accounting tools\, and workflow in the design process. \nFinally\, the course will guide participants through a workshop and facilitated discussion in which key barriers to and opportunities for implementing carbon reduction strategies in participants’ practices are identified\, discussed\, prioritized\, and formulated into an action list for participants to reference moving forward to actualize real carbon reduction in their work. \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\n Understand the impact of embodied carbon and carbon storage in building materials. \nBecome familiar with real-world examples and case studies that stored carbon. \nIdentify tools\, workflow strategies\, and other resources for carbon accounting in the design process. \nTake action on opportunities and strategies for integrating climate action and carbon reduction into their professional practice. \n \n \n \n \n \n Funding Grants Available: Submit by October 12th\, 2023\n The express grant is designed to help businesses of all sizes respond quickly to emerging needs and keep employees engaged. SUMMARY:Embodied Carbon in Concrete and Wood
DESCRIPTION:This course looks at the carbon and environmental impacts of concrete and wood building materials\, how they have improved over the years\, and where they still fall short. We’ll focus on concrete’s carbon emissions problem and solutions\, cement and concrete alternatives (including supplementary cementitious materials)\, and building code changes. We’ll also look at wood building materials\, including mass timber and other engineered products. Forestry’s carbon accounting and environmental impacts are complicated and in flux\, so we’ll dig in to some of those challenges\, the state of forestry certifications\, and life-cycle data/environmental product declarations. Discussion is encouraged. \nThe course is taught by Brent Ehrlich\, Product & Materials Specialist\, and Paula Melton\, Editorial Director\, at BuildingGreen. \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\n • Participants will learn the carbon impacts of cement and the importance of low-carbon concrete.• Participants will learn about low-carbon concrete alternatives and how code changes can allow for their use.• Participants will learn about engineered wood products and their benefits and limitations.• Participants will learn about the current state of forest certifications and how our understanding of these is impacting wood’s embodied carbon. \n \n \n \n \n \n Funding Grants Available: Submit by January 18th\, 2024\n The Express grant is designed to help businesses of all sizes respond quickly to emerging needs and keep employees engaged. Product choices often require tradeoffs. This course helps attendees wade through the challenges of first cost\, value engineering\, few “like products\,” and more. \n \n \n \n \n \n Education Credits\n Earn 6 AIA LU/HSW unitsContinuing education credits are available from BE+\, reported for each 1-hour session attended. \n \n \n \n \n \n Learning Objectives\n 1. Participants will be able to contextualize material health concerns and claims through understanding key areas of analysis like human health\, environmental health and carbon\, ecosystem health and sourcing\, circularity\, and social health and equity (which represent the vetting buckets of the Architecture & Design Materials Pledge with the AIA) and the certifications that verify achievement in each key area. \n2. Participants will learn how to find optimized products among the numerous material options\, databases\, and rating systems leveraging certifications\, ingredient disclosures\, and reporting. \n3. Participants will understand basic applicability of material vetting to ESG as project-specific materials vetting rolls up to portfolio level reporting. \n4.
